Describe how the engine is actually used
Tell the workshop about trip length, charging frequency, climate and extended parking. Do not infer the entire operating pattern from an electric-mode selection or one fuel receipt. The hybrid control strategy may use the engine under conditions the owner does not expect; interpret that behaviour through the applicable technical information. The PHEV versus EV guide prevents this maintenance question being applied to the wrong model. Repeated rough running, warnings or a material change in behaviour still deserves diagnosis rather than a blanket reassurance that hybrids do that.
Preserve the time basis of maintenance
Obtain the correct PHEV service schedule and compare it with dated records. Ask which requirements are controlled by time, distance or relevant operating conditions. Do not substitute an invented interval simply because the owner reports few engine hours. A dashboard reminder can support the maintenance record but should not replace the applicable schedule and invoices. If a seller claims the engine never needed service, ask for the basis. Low petrol use is a description of consumption, not permission to disregard fluids, filters or inspections required for the actual vehicle.
Discuss fuel turnover without owner improvisation
Use the specified fuel and ask qualified support how the manufacturer's storage guidance applies to your pattern. Fuel quality, age and storage conditions cannot be reduced to one universal number of weeks. Do not add unapproved chemicals, drain the tank yourself or deliberately run it empty to create turnover. Keep a simple record of purchases if investigating a concern. The objective is an appropriate operating routine within the vehicle's requirements, not an artificial cycle designed to imitate advice for a different hybrid system or climate.
Record symptoms rather than forcing an engine demonstration
Where rough starts, unusual odour, smoke, fluid loss or warning messages occur, document the circumstances and arrange a qualified assessment. Do not repeatedly force an operating mode or clear codes before review. A workshop may need to distinguish fuel, ignition, cooling, mounting or control issues using appropriate evidence. The existing thermal-system checks can provide related observations without replacing engine diagnosis. Never run a combustion engine in an enclosed or poorly ventilated space, even for a short routine intended to keep it healthy.
Build a whole-vehicle parking plan
Extended storage also affects the 12V supply, tyres and the traction battery's approved storage condition. Use the low-voltage storage guide and the applicable owner information to agree the plan. Do not disconnect systems or attach charging equipment without confirming the correct procedure. Establish who inspects the vehicle during a long absence and what conditions require qualified attention. A plan that addresses only the fuel tank can still leave the owner with damaged tyres, an unavailable access system or unresolved warning messages at collection.
Keep electric convenience from hiding maintenance cost
A dependable home charging arrangement supports daily electric travel, but the ownership budget still needs the PHEV's applicable engine and hybrid maintenance. Separate electricity, fuel and workshop expenditure when comparing the vehicle with a pure EV. For a used candidate, request combustion-system service records even when the seller emphasises electric use. Do not assume that a healthy traction battery proves the engine is healthy, or that clean engine oil proves the rest of the hybrid system has been checked.
Set the receiving workshop an evidence-based task
At arrival and first service, reconcile prior maintenance and storage history before ordering a generic package. Ask the technician to explain overdue work, diagnostic work and optional preventive work separately. Record the next service point from the correct schedule and completed tasks. Revisit the plan if the vehicle's routine changes to frequent long-distance travel or prolonged parking. A useful maintenance file tells the next workshop what happened and why; it should not depend on the owner's recollection that the car was usually driven electrically.
Buyer checklist
- Confirm this is the PHEV, not Tai 7 EV.
- Track time-based service despite low petrol use.
- Use approved fuel and storage guidance.
- Preserve engine symptoms and arrange qualified diagnosis.
Questions and answers
Should I run the engine every week regardless of use?
Do not adopt an arbitrary interval. Follow the exact vehicle's operating and storage instructions and ask qualified support about unusually long periods without normal engine use.
Can mostly-electric driving eliminate engine servicing?
No. The engine remains part of the PHEV. Apply the relevant schedule and condition assessment rather than treating low fuel consumption as a maintenance exemption.
